An Ode to Hyacinths

by Derby S. (she/her), 14

Your indigo blossoms decorate the earth,
The hill on which you stand, kept alive by your delicate petals.
Your roots are clean,
Washed of the blood from which you were born.
Apollo’s love is your life force,
Feeding you the glow of his warmth or the sting of his tears.

The wind who once sung to you so lovingly,
Now gives you his deadly kiss.
His jealous steps tear through the earth beneath you,
His vengeful screams echoing,
Carried through your bleeding heart.

So now your flowers lie,
Grieving atop a hill.
A symbol of Apollo’s love,
And your love for him,
Lost to the jealous wind.
