beauty

by Mikayla C., 16

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
At least, that is what they tell me
Yet I do not see myself
On TV
On the big screen
On most book shelves
My beauty has been reduced to toxic characters and toxic relationships and toxic plotlines
My beauty is so undergrown it barely survives as just a seed in the ground
My beauty is so undergrown that people still have the audacity
To invade my space with ruthless ignorance,
Draining the water meant to raise my beauty from the ground
My beauty is so undergrown that no one bothers to look for it anymore
Instead settling for pink and blue flowers
That all look the same
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
But if beauty has become merely a demonstration of sameness
Do we really deserve to behold it?
Don’t we deserve better than that?
