Mothers

by Kit P. (she/her), 18

who am I
(Aphrodite answers)
You are seafoam and blood, a pearl born from the grit of the world
You are my love, my beauty, my child, and a piece of my soul
A little divine thing breaking through earthly soil
why am I here
(Audre Lorde answers)
You are here to live
And to help others live
To understand with head and heart and hand
That everyone deserves a voice, and a chance
how do I live
(Sappho answers)
You live through dreams and paper, darling
With ink in your spit you must shout your story
Live so that the legacy of your words will outlast the fires of time
And your heart can continue to live besides those of the future
but what if I can’t do it alone
(My Mothers answer)
You are never alone.

Kit Painter (she/her) has dreamt of being an author since she learned that was an actual job. She is a native of fairy forests as much as her childhood hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. She’s spent a lifetime dedicating herself to the craft of creating the magical worlds she feels so at home in, painting them in both novel prose and poetry. Now, she is finally taking the next step towards her dream at the College of William and Mary, where she will study Psychology, Women and Gender Studies, and of course, Creative Writing.
