she’s the house

by Fiona C., 12

She’s the house
that you have to be quiet by when you walk past
so you don’t disturb her.

She’s the house
with all the antiques, and even if she unexpectedly let you in
you still wouldn’t be allowed to touch.

She’s the house
who makes sure your garland is up–
in the most historic neighborhood in town, you can’t be the odd house out.

She’s the house
that never has any candy out for Halloween,
no matter how many times you knock.

She’s the house
that’s lonely and quiet–
kids gone, husband left, and has 1 dog, instead of her usual 2.

She’s the house
that you may always feel bad for,
but she’s so isolated that she would never want your help.
