spelling bee

by Emma C., 15

they said everything was wrong,
i took up too much space,
a waste of square footage
that i wasn’t worth
They said, stop
[breathing]
because that’s not what you’re supposed to
but when i met you, i forgot how to breathe
& learned how to live
taught myself from your home-made tutorials
inhaled the stars flitting across your bedroom ceiling
traced words in the air, following your finger
let myself grow
in the space between your breaths and mine
and remembered how to spell enough
