The Journey

by Arely Carrillo-Reyes, 14

They journeyed far
for a chance to sour
from their distant earth
to the land of dreams.

They did it to
never have to worry
about the next time they eat,
where they sleep,
or why they get sick.

Even if it’s not in this life
the future will thank them
For what they’re doing.
For walking through the heat,
the cold,
with blisters on their feet
And nothing but a dream.

Leaving behind places that they once knew
for a chance of rebirth,
finding ways to prepare,
their bodies are filled with courage
and hope,
with eyes focused on the center.
